6 Day South-West - Self drive

6 Day South-West

The most-populated part of Iceland, the South-West, has so much to offer. Whether it’s for family holidays or romantic breaks, there’s something for everyone in both rural and more built-up areas, and what better way to discover it than to hire a car and go driving? Being your own boss, you can take to the wheel and go where you want when you want, doing away with the restrictions of scheduled tours.

As you discover what the region has in store, you can enjoy a relaxing trip to a lagoon, investigate both nature and history at our most astonishing national park, catch a glimpse of the mountain made famous by a novel and take advantage of the coastal locations with a beautiful boat trip. There’s even the possibility of spotting seals! Yes, you can cram as much as you like into your days in the South-West and still be assured of starting each new morning afresh thanks to a comfortable night in a cosy hotel.

1st DAY: ARRIVAL DAY | KEFLAVIK- REYKJAVIK

You arrive at Keflavik International Airport and it takes about 50 minutes to drive or take the Flybus/taxi to Reykjavík. Hotel Loftleiðir offers a free hotel shuttle and we would recommend that you take advantage of a trip to the city centre to see what the town has to offer.

2nd DAY: REYKJAVIK - LAUGARVATN

HIGHLIGHTS:Blue Lagoon – Selfoss – Gullfoss waterfall – Geysir

We recommend that you drive from the hotel to the famous Blue Lagoon, where you can renew your relationship with nature and enjoy breathing the clean air while relaxing in the warm, geothermal seawater. From there you will drive on through Stokkseyri and Selfoss and to our famous waterfall Gullfoss before reaching Geysir. After leaving Geysir you just need to drive to Laugarvatn where you will stay overnight.

3rd DAY: LAUGARVATN - LAUGAR IN SÆLINGSDALUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Þingvellir National Park – Bogarfjörður – Settlement Museum – Búðardalur

On Day 3 you can experience Þingvellir National Park, site of the Althing assembly. Then drive north to Borgarnes and visit the Settlement Museum, which recounts the story of the island’s first inhabitants. After this we recommend for you to go to Paradise Hollow, which is a beautiful little oasis near the impressive waterfall Glanni in Nordurá River (just before you arrive at Bifröst). From there drive to Búðardalur and then to Laugar í Sælingsdal. At Laugar there is a geothermal area and a naturally-heated swimming pool that was built in 1932. Please note that if you are driving a 4wd you can also drive through Kaldadalur.

4th DAY: LAUGAR IN SAELINGSDALUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Fellsströnd – Reykhólar – Breiðafjordur Bay
A perfect opportunity to spend the day around the beautiful area of Laugar. If you do so, we recommend that you drive to Fellsströnd, where you would take in unbelievable scenery of Breyðafjörður Bay and the innumerable islands. If you are lucky you may see seals but don’t forget that seals like colours, so bring something colourful and you could get some sightings, not to mention great photographs!

5th DAY: SNAEFELLSNES - REYKJAVIK

HIGHLIGHTS: Stykkishólmur – Flatey – Snæfellsjökull glacier – Ólafsvík – Hellnar

On the way back to Reykjavík we suggest that you drive to Snæfellsnes Peninsula. If you choose to do that you will drive to Stykkishólmur. Companies like Seatours offer different types of boat trips from Stykkishólmur and a regular ferry service to the West Fjords with a stop-off at the remarkable timeless island, Flatey. You will next head out to Snæfellsjökull glacier. The mountain is one of the most famous sites of Iceland, primarily due to the novel, Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne, in which, on Snæfellsjökull glacier, the protagonists find the entrance to a passage leading to the centre of the Earth. Last summer a Hollywood box office movie was made about the wonders of the glacier, based on the book and starring Brendan Fraser. Snæfellsjökull glacier is also famous for great powers and energy that many spiritually- minded people sense from it. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth. After exploring these phenomenal sights, you will head off to Reykjavík.
