8 Day East to East with Smyril Line

Exploring the great outdoors is an activity not to be missed in Iceland. From grand volcanoes and fjords to quaint fishing ports and historical sites, we’ve got a fantastic mix of nature and culture. On a route from Egilsstadir to Reykjavik and back a different way, you’ll be travelling full circle to find out what the entire country has to offer. This package brings over a week of sight‐seeing wonder, including the opportunity to visit lakes and waterfalls, pop into museums and even stop off at the filming location of a James Bond movie! You can do as much or as little as you like. No matter what, you’ll be guaranteed beautiful views wherever you go.

To top it off at the end of each day, we’ll have a cosy room waiting for you in seven Edda hotels plus a night at Hilton Reykjavik Nordica so you can get a refreshing sleep before the next day’s drive.

1st DAY: ARRIVAL DAY | EGILSSTAÐIR - STÓRUTJARNIR

HIGHLIGHTS: Egilsstaðir – Möðrudalur – Lake Mývatn – Dimmuborgir – Nature Baths

After arriving at Seyðisfjörður, it takes you about 30 minutes to drive to Egilsstaðir. Drive north to Mývatn and across Möðrudalsöræfi to the famous Lake Mývatn. On the way, (if you’re driving a 4WD) we recommend you drive to Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall. At Mývatn we suggest that you explore Lake Myvatn and its surroundings, visiting highlights such as Dimmuborgir and the colourful sulphurous slopes of Namaskarð and Krafla volcano. Just before you arrive at Stórutjarnir, you’ll see Goðafoss waterfall.

2nd DAY: STÓRUTJARNIR - AKUREYRI

HIGHLIGHTS: Húsavík – Ásbyrgi – Goðafoss – Vaglaskógur – Akureyri

We recommend that you drive to Ásbyrgi the magnificent horseshoe‐shaped canyon. At Húsavík, you have the opportunity to go on a whale watching tour. From Húsavík, drive to the capital of the North, Akureyri, to spend the night.

3rd DAY: AKUREYRI - LAUGARBAKKI

HIGHLIGHTS: Akureyri – Glaumbær Folk Museum – Vatnsnes – Vatnsdalshólar – Icelandic Seal Centre

Spend the day exploring Akureyri and then drive over to Laugarbakki. On the way we recommend that you stop at Glaumbær Folk Museum which is situated in a fascinating farmhouse dating from the 18th–19th century. You can also visit the Icelandic Seal Centre at Hvammstangi. On the Vatnsnes Peninsula tourists have a unique opportunity to watch both harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus).

4th DAY: LAUGARBAKKI - REYKJAVÍK

HIGHLIGHTS: Bifröst – Borgarnes – The Settlement Centre – Hvalfjörður bay

From Laugarbakki you drive south to Reykjavík. On the way we would like to recommend for you to look at The Saga of the Settlement of Iceland and the Viking Egill Skallagrimsson at The Settlement Centre at Borgarnes. If you are not in a hurry, we suggest you take a detour through the beautiful region of Hvalfjörður on your way to Reykjavík.

5th DAY: REYKJAVÍK - SKÓGAR

HIGHLIGHTS: Þingvellir National Park – Geysir – Gullfoss – Skálholt – Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls

Drive down to South Iceland where you can see many of the country’s best natural wonders. We recommend that you drive to Þingvellir National Park – the ancient site of the world’s first parliament – and from there to the great area of Geysir and the waterfall Gullfoss. From the waterfall Gullfoss drive to Skógar Not far away from Gullfoss and Geysir is one of the country's most important historic sites, Skálholt. It was the seat of the bishops of the southern see for 740 years and a school was established there around the year 1056. After this we advocate that you go on to see Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Skógar Folk Museum is always fun to visit as well.

6th DAY: SKÓGAR - NESJAR (HÖFN)

HIGHLIGHTS: Dyrahólaey ‐ Skaftafell National Park – Svartifoss waterfall Vatnajökull glacier – Jökulsárlón glacial Lagoon
Today you will drive along the south coast in an easterly direction. You have the opportunity to see puffins and collect shells or beautiful stones at the black sand beach. There’s also the possibility of seeing or even going on the largest glacier in Europe – Vatnajökull glacier – and dropping into the famous Glacial Lagoon where they filmed the James Bond movie, “Die Another Day”.

7th DAY: NESJAR (HÖFN) - EGILSSTAÐIR

HIGHLIGHTS: Stone collection at Stöðvafjörður – Papey Island

Explore the spectacular East Fjords. The East Fjords are a magnificent landscape of long, narrow fjords, steep mountains and jagged peaks with many more beautiful natural wonders in between.
