8 Day Westfjord

8 Day Westfjord
The area of the West Fjords brings with it some mighty views and surprisingly varied terrain. Making your way northwards to this most ancient part of the land, there is no end of amazing stop-offs on the way. You can spend your first night in lively Reykjavik and then set off on a week’s driving you’ll never forget! Along your route you’ll find The Settlement Museum, a phenomenal cliff that’s a favourite with nesting birds, and our legendary national park – to name just a few. For a little relaxation before getting back behind the wheel, there are opportunities to bathe in some amazing pools and, for a truly memorable afternoon, Vigur Island is a peaceful must-see in contrast with the power of the waterfalls and glaciers around.

Thanks to this self-drive option, you can pick and choose as you wish, so, whether or not you take us up on our recommendations, you can be guaranteed a holiday to suit you. All you need is a car and a map, and West Iceland is at your disposal.

As each day draws to a close, you’ll be able to find yourself in the capable hands of one of our friendly hotels, offering you a good night’s sleep and even a hearty breakfast.

1st DAY: ARRIVAL DAY | KEFLAVIK - REYKJAVIK

Arrive at Keflavik International Airport. It then takes about 50 minutes to drive or take the Flybus/taxi to Reykjavík. Hotel Loftleiðir offers a free hotel shuttle and we would recommend you take the opportunity to go to the city centre and see what the town has to offer. Check what's going on here: www.reykjavik.is
Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Loftleiðir

2nd DAY: REYKJAVIK - NESJAVELLIR

HIGHLIGHTS: Blue Lagoon - Nesjvellir - Þingvellir National Park

We suggest that you begin your trip by driving to the famous Blue Lagoon to indulge in some bathing or to simply enjoy the invigoration of the clean air. After this, you can drive back in the direction of Reykjavík and on to Nesjavellir. Nesjavellir is a geothermal area and the nature there is breathtaking, filled with power and energy from the Earth. If you have time we recommend that you then head over to our National Park, Þingvellir, a site of historical, cultural and geological importance. Here you can bask in its amazing landscape. For many, the most impressive thing about the park is that you are able to visualise the Continental Divide and get an insight into the rifting of giant tectonic plates.
Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Hengill

3rd DAY: NESJAVELLIR - LAUGAR IN SÆLINGSDALUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Settlement Museum – Paradise Hollow – Naturally-heated swimming pool

You will start by driving north to Borgarnes, and we suggest a visit to the Settlement Museum, which recounts the story of the island’s first inhabitants. After this we recommend for you to go to Paradise Hollow. This is a beautiful little oasis near the impressive waterfall Glanni in Nordurá River (just before you arrive at Bifröst). From there drive to Búðardalur and then to Laugar í Sælingsdal. At Laugar there is a geothermal area and a naturally-heated swimming pool that was built in 1932. Please note that if you are driving a 4wd you can also drive to Kaldadal.
Overnight at Hótel Edda Laugar í Sælingsdal

4th DAY: LAUGAR IN SÆLINGSDALUR - ÍSAFJÖRÐUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Flókalundur – Látrabjarg – Dynjandi – Hrafnseyri

From Laugar you drive to Flókalundur. If you have time we recommend a detour to Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Europe. At Látrabjarg there is a spectacular 14km-long, 444m-high cliff. There you can get up close to some of the millions of inhabiting birds such as puffins and razorbills. From Flókalundur you drive to Hrafnseyri but, before you come to it, you can spot the impressive waterfall Dynjandi at the bottom of the fjord Arnarfjordur. Once at Hrafnseyri you may like to visit an interesting museum dedicated to Jón Sigurdsson, hero of Iceland’s battle for independence. Upon leaving Hrafnseyri you head for Ísafjörður.
Overnight at Hotel Edda Ísafjorður

5th DAY: ÍSAFJÖRÐUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Vigur Island

Slowing down the pace a little, you can spend the day in the Ísafjörður area. We recommend a visit to Vigur, which is a small and charming island. Over the years, Vigur has earned itself a great reputation and is therefore a must on any itinerary. Its five friendly inhabitants welcome you with their relaxed, easy-going manner and, somehow, one feels as though time stands still on the island Vigur.

6th DAY: ÍSAFJÖRÐUR - SÆLINGSDALUR

HIGHLIGHTS: Súðavík – Steingrímsfjarðarheiði Heath – Hólmavík – Borðeyri

Today you return to Sælingsdalur. Drive to Hólmavík taking a route across Steingrímsfjarðarheiði to the spectacular region of the West Fjords, which is the oldest part of Iceland. From Hólmavík you drive on to Borðeyri. Just before you come to Borðeyri you can turn right and drive over Laxárdalsheiði and on to Búðardalur (just a few km. from Sælingsdalur).
Overnight at Hotel Edda Laugar Sælingsdalur

7th DAY: SÆLINGSDALUR - REYKJAVÍK

HIGHLIGHTS: Borgarfjörður area – Reykholt – Hvalfjorður fjord

Explore the Borgarfjörður area. If you did not visit Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls on your way west we recommend a stop there. Somewhere else we advise you to check out is Reykholt in Borgarfjorður, which is an historic site – a cultural centre past and present. From Borgarfjörður you go via Hvalfjorður fjord back to our capital city, Reykjavik.
