8 Day East to East with Smyril Line - Travel Suggestion

Exploring the great outdoors is an activity not to be missed in Iceland. From grand volcanoes and fjords to quaint fishing ports and historical sites, we’ve got a fantastic mix of nature and culture. On a route from Egilsstadir to Reykjavik and back a different way, you’ll be travelling full circle to find out what the entire country has to offer. This travel suggestion brings over a week of sightseeing wonder, including the opportunity to visit lakes and waterfalls, pop into museums and even stop off at the filming location of a James Bond movie! You can do as much or as little as you like. No matter what, you’ll be guaranteed beautiful views wherever you go.

To top it off at the end of each day, you could have a cosy room waiting for you in seven Edda hotels or a night at Hilton Reykjavik Nordica so you can get a refreshing sleep before the next day’s drive.

1st DAY: ARRIVAL DAY | EGILSSTADIR - STORUTJARNIR

HIGHLIGHTS: Egilsstadir – Moðrudalur – Lake Myvatn – Dimmuborgir – Nature Baths

After arriving at Seydisfjorður, it takes you about 30 minutes to drive to Egilsstadir. Drive north to Myvatn and across Modrudalsoraefi to the famous Lake Myvatn. On the way, (if you’re driving a 4WD) we recommend you drive to Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall. At Myvatn we suggest that you explore Lake Myvatn and its surroundings, visiting highlights such as Dimmuborgir and the colourful sulphurous slopes of Namaskard and Krafla volcano. Just before you arrive at Storutjarnir, you’ll see Godafoss waterfall.

2nd DAY: STÓRUTJARNIR - AKUREYRI

HIGHLIGHTS: Husavik – Asbyrgi – Godafoss – Vaglaskogur forrest – Akureyri

We recommend that you drive to Asbyrgi the magnificent horseshoe?shaped canyon. At Husavik, you have the opportunity to go on a whale watching tour. From Husavik, drive to the capital of the North, Akureyri, to spend the night.

3rd DAY: AKUREYRI - LAUGAR IN SAELINGSDAL

HIGHLIGHTS: Akureyri – Glaumbaer Folk Museum – Vatnsnes – Vatnsdalsholar – Icelandic Seal Centre

Spend the day exploring Akureyri and then drive over to Laugar in Sælingsdal. On the way we recommend that you stop at Glaumbaer Folk Museum which is situated in a fascinating farmhouse dating from the 18th–19th century. You can also visit the Icelandic Seal Centre at Hvammstangi. On the Vatnsnes Peninsula tourists have a unique opportunity to watch both harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). Driving from Akureyri to Laugar in Saelingsdal, we recommend that you travel in the direction of Hrútafjörður and via the mountain road over the heath Laxárdalsheiði.

4th DAY: LAUGAR IN SAELINGSDAL - REYKJAVÍK

HIGHLIGHTS: Bifrost – Borgarnes – The Settlement Centre – Hvalfjordur bay

From Laugar you drive south to Reykjavik. On the way we would like to recommend for you to look at The Saga of the Settlement of Iceland and the Viking Egill Skallagrimsson at The Settlement Centre at Borgarnes. If you are not in a hurry, we suggest you take a detour through the beautiful region of Hvalfjorður on your way to Reykjavik.

5th DAY: REYKJAVÍK - SKÓGAR

HIGHLIGHTS: Thingvellir National Park – Geysir – Gullfoss – Skalholt – Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls

Drive down to South Iceland where you can see many of the country’s best natural wonders. We recommend that you drive to Thingvellir National Park – the ancient site of the world’s first parliament – and from there to the great area of Geysir and the waterfall Gullfoss. From the waterfall Gullfoss drive to Skogar not far away from Gullfoss and Geysir is one of the country's most important historic sites, Skalholt. It was the seat of the bishops of the southern see for 740 years and a school was established there around the year 1056. After this we advocate that you go on to see Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. Skogar Folk Museum is always fun to visit as well.

6th DAY: SKOGAR - HOFN

HIGHLIGHTS: Dyraholaey ? Skaftafell National Park – Svartifoss waterfall Vatnajokull glacier – Jokulsarlon glacial Lagoon

Today you will drive along the south coast in an easterly direction. You have the opportunity to see puffins and collect shells or beautiful stones at the black sand beach. There’s also the possibility of seeing or even going on the largest glacier in Europe – Vatnajokull glacier – and dropping into the famous Glacial Lagoon where they filmed the James Bond movie, “Die Another Day”.

7th DAY: HOFN - EGILSSTADIR

HIGHLIGHTS: Stone collection at Stodvarfjorður – Papey Island

Explore the spectacular East Fjords. The East Fjords are a magnificent landscape of long, narrow fjords, steep mountains and jagged peaks with many more beautiful natural wonders in between.
